Grunt Gundam Multiplayer Level
Year: Fall 2023 - January 2024
Role: Solo Dev
Engine: Halo Infinite Forge
Concept: A Multiplayer Map where you fight on top of 2 battling mechs
What is it? This is a 3-layered team deathmatch map where 2 teams battle it out on top of 2 large Grunt Mechas!
Process:
For this project, I learned from my previous experience with this engine and wanted to play towards the strength of the engine, which is building multiplayer maps.
I started by creating a basic paper map of the map layout. This took some time because I wanted to have the 2 mechs have a fighting pose that looked dynamic while still being symmetrical to keep balance (a difficult feat because most fighting poses are asymmetrical in nature).
I then sketched what I wanted the 2 mechs to look like, keeping in mind the proportions of the grunt. I also kept in mind trying to merge both of the art styles of early Halo CE grunts and that of early Mobile Suit Gundam
I wanted to focus on the look of the grunts as I figured the look played a part in the fun factor of the level.
After preproduction was done, I finally hopped into the engine and grey-boxed the general look for the figures, starting off with broad shapes at first. This process took some effort because I had to balance between making a figure that had the right proportions for a grunt, had the dynamic pose that I had in mind, and was fun to move around in.
Once the basic shapes were laid down, I grey-boxed the finer details for the map (not much changed from here besides slight details from playtests)
From here, I added the weapon layouts, playtested and tweaked the placements, included the vehicles, and made the final look for the level
